its all up to you…

The months Island Batik Challenge, was left down to us as ambassadors to decide what to make. Head over to the Island Batik page to see all the amazing creations from this month

www.facebook.com/islandbatik

I’ve been busy over the last few months completing the first of three modules of a surface pattern design course, so I was keen to bring some of my designs to life…

I used Jewel Quest fabric collection, along with some bright green and purple threads from Aurifil to create my cushion covers

Jewel Quest fabric from Island Batik

I really love free motion quilting, its just like drawing but with your machine, and I get a real buzz from it, here are some close ups, each cover is quilted using Hobbs 80/20 cotton mix batting.

16″ x 16″ cushion covers

If you love these cushion covers, I have some exciting news… I’m currently taking orders, so please get in touch as I’d love to make something that fits your living room or bedroom decor. These cushions covers are made to order, which means they are available in all sizes and colours, prices start from just £20.

These two cushions are already looking stunning in their new home, and look brilliant on their new owners snuggle sofa

Thanks so much for stopping by to read my blog, happy Monday!

Vintage Re-Imagined…

Just in the nick of time… March Island Batik Challenge was;

 Vintage Re-imagined

Vintage quilts inspiring new creations

36” x 36” or larger

Vintage Reimagined

I’ve always loved the hourglass block, so I wanted to take this and add to it. I also wanted something bold and bright – so I set to designing my quilt on my EQ8 software…

Its quite a lovely feeling seeing a design come to life. I would like to take you on a little journey of photos to see my quilt come together…

All the fabrics used in this quilt, were given to me from Island batik, as part of the Island Batik Ambassador program 2019

My cat was keen to try out the quilt, i think she approved of the Black Batting from Hobbs… Yes BLACK!!  – have you ever used black batting before?

DSC_5228

So why use black?

Hobbs Heirloom® Premium 80/20 Black Cotton Blend Batting is highly recommended for quilts made with black or dark-colored fabrics

It is made using color-fast, dyed cotton fibers to provide quilters with a batting that not only keeps the fabric colors true, it will not create light fiber lint on the quilt top during the quilting process

Hobbs Heirloom® Premium 80/20 Black Cotton Blend Batting is manufactured in the same manner as our Hobbs Heirloom® Premium 80/20 (Natural) Cotton/ Poly Blend Batting – it is lightly bonded and needle-punched for exceptional strength and durability and it’s machine-washable, with no worry about the black dye in the cotton bleeding.

Hobbs Heirloom® Premium 80/20 Black Cotton Blend Batting is wonderful to quilt by hand or machine. Close quilting yields a flat, low-loft appearance, while more space between stitching lines yields a slightly higher loft.

Quilting/stitching should be every 4″ inches, or closer, and quilters may experience shrinkage of 3-5%.

I quilted this using Gutermann Sulky Thread, and used Black binding

It was such a beautiful evening here in the UK, so I was super keen to grab some shots with the evening sun shining onto the quilt…

And guess who wasn’t far away? yes you guessed it, my cat was happy to have a comfy quilt to sit on, as she watched the sun set.

DSC_5259

Be sure to leave a comment, I’d love to hear if you’ve ever used Hobbs Black batting before, or quilted using Gutermann Sulky threads

The Big Reveal…

Wow, can you believe its been over a year since myself and Dawn begin this mystery quilt along sampler, today I’m going to take you a little journey, so you can see this quilt come to life…

Block One – Cherish; was designed me. After the very sad loss of my Nan (my best friend), I took time to reflect on the love around me, the strength I found from friends and family to keep going. Sometimes we are all guilty of not finding the time to call family or a friend, and this I know, I’m guilty of. So this block was designed for my Nan, to let her know I love her and miss her every single day, and I cherish every memory we shared.

Block 2 – A spring basket; was designed by Dawn, and this is what she said about her block ‘

Seeing the daffodils and primroses peek out from the melting snow means spring is here, so this month’s Sweetest Things Sampler block is an Easter basket, full of springtime wonders

‘The first Easter baskets I remember were little paper and glue ones, made in primary school. When we returned from lessons, they’d been filled with speckled candy eggs. So now whenever I see little Easter baskets, I’m reminded of this and how little acts of kindness, mean a lot’

_20180408_140226

Block 3 – April Showers bring may flowers; was my turn… my inspiration cane from ‘April showers, bring May flowers.

In this block you will find, free motion embroidery flowers, little silver raindrops and a  padding which gives a lovely 3D effect to the umbrella

_20180408_215109

Block 4 – Nest; is Dawn design, here is where her inspiration came from

‘Inspired by our little feathered friends’ who put so much care and effort into nest building, weaving twigs, moss, and feathers together – it reminds me of the loving care which goes into making our quilts.

_20180521_121215

With the first few block made, I decided to get busy making the Irish Chain blocks, which would join our sampler blocks together. Using the quilt-as-you-go method, this quilt started to come together quite quickly

_20180708_155037

Block 5 – Basket of Strawberry sweetness; and I was up… and would could be sweeter then a huge basket of juicy strawberries

This block includes a basket woven from Brenda Riddles’ “Caroline” ticking fabric, juicy looking strawberries, and the sweetest little quilted butterflies.

DSC_2046

Block 6 – From our little hive to yours; is dawn design, and nothing gets sweeter the honey

Here is what Dawn said about her inspiration for the block…

‘It’s lovely to hear the little bees humming, busily working together, nurturing the hive – it reminds me of the hum of the sewing machine, and how just like the busy little bees, so much can be achieved when we work together’

_20180826_191641

Block 7 – Quench your thirst;  was my turn…and yes i know its food related again 😉 But it was a beautiful summer in 2018, and I enjoyed many warm evenings in the garden, with a fresh juice or two, while the kids ate ice-creams

Block 8 – Prairie Point Hedgehog; Dawn had created the cutest block of all time, with the very clever idea of using prairie points to create a 3D hedgehog! Hedgehogs are one of my favorites, so this block was so lovely to make

This is what Dawn said…

‘Spending time in the outdoors, among the little wonders of nature is lovely any time of year, but a fine autumn day, when the fruits are ripening, the leaves turning colour and the possums making themselves a cosy spot to overwinter, is especially sweet

_20181010_172718

Block 9 – Birthday Treats; Inspired by my Birthday (did anyone notice it was food related again?) I say you cant beat a cuppa and slice of cake, I love the little bow I added in this one, and the quilted bunting

Block 10 – Mistletoe and Mittens; and it was turning chilly, Dawn designed the perfect block, here is what Dawn said…

‘In winter, when trees have shed their leaves, there’s something kind of wonderful in the big bunches of mistletoe, hugging the tree branches. Mistletoe is fairly common in this corner of the U.K. It’s rich green leaves and bright little berries, welcome colour this time of year. So let’s put on our warm woolly mittens, and go find some mistletoe…

_20181126_120514

Block 11 – Deer in the snow; This block was designed by Dawn and here is where her inspiration came from…

‘Even in the middle of winter, you can still find little moments of wonder. It might be the bright winter sunshine, shimmering snow, the shy doe in the woods, or perhaps the little snow globe which shimmers when shaken, that comes out this time each year’

_20190122_144840

Block 12 – Sew Happy;  Was the last block in this sampler, designed by me.

My inspiration came from the one thing that gives me joy everyday… yes it could really only be about one thing, something which makes our lives a whole lot happier

_20190115_162005

I had to get busy now, cutting and joining the rest of the Irish Chain Blocks, so my quilt could be joined together

Show Your Wings Blog Hop, including a fabulous Giveaway…

Welcome to the first day of ‘show your wings’ Blog Hop hosted by Carol @justletmequilt. Thanks for stopping by, I hope you like my idea, be sure to leave me a comment at the end, they make my day, and why not follow along if you like what you see 🙂

Show Your Wings Logo

I liked the idea of having a silhouette of something with wings, to give the impression of it showing off, as the sun goes down.

DSC_0601

I had a bunch of Island batik scraps, some of which were left over from the ‘all a flutter’ collection, which i knew would make a powerful sunset, so i began cutting out lots and lots and LOTS of squares, which is where my AccuQuilt cutting machine came in very handy. But what took longer then cutting out the squares??? my constant rearranging of the squares 😉

dsc_0600.jpg

I used Vlieseline Bondaweb to transfer my bats, I used three different sizes…

DSC_0601

I couldn’t resist using some Gutermann metallic thread to add some sparkle to my twilight quilt

I used Island batik fabric to bind the quilt, and added some quilted stars for some extra detail, using the metallic threads

and finally my bats were ready to fly and show their wings…

Magnificent Minis…

Why is the first of everything seem so over whelming… our first day at school, first job interview, first challenge of the 2019 Island batik Ambassador program… 😉

Magnificent Minis

Magnificent Minis

  • Must be 24” x 24” or smaller
  • Any fabrics
  • Any technique

So I pulled out everything from my Island Batik box

These are the fabrics I chose to work with… don’t you just love the Dragonfly print in Magenta

dsc_0535.jpg

As I poured all these beauties from the box, wondering what would be created with it all in 2019, the inspiration hit me to create my first challenge piece

dsc_0554.jpg

I fused strips of my chosen fabrics onto Vlieseline Bondaweb, and cut them into mini 1 1/2″ Dresden plates

dsc_0558.jpg

I started joining the pieces together, using a beautiful silver metallic thread from Gutermann.

I wanted to give the impression of the fabric pieces falling from a box/bucket and creating quilts in 2019…  I added extra details on the bucket using the metallic thread

Ta Da!

I quilted this mini using Hobbs Thermore batting – great for wall hangings and mini quilts. The bias binding was the very vibrant Paisley Dot – Leprechaun

‘My Happy Place’ Row-along…

Welcome to ‘my happy place’ row along, hosted by the extremely talented Marian at Seams to be Sew. Today is the day i get to show you mine… the challenge was to create a row 12″ x 30″ vertical or horizontal to show my happy place…

So… where would i be if i could, where do i feel happy…

Somewhere warm, surrounded by candles and a cheeky glass of wine, but still be able to listen to the kids playing downstairs, yep its that one day a year i get to soak in the bath, full to the brim with bubbles and scented candles all around me – Mothers Day!!

My four boys love to spoil me with bubble bath, bath bombs and candles on mothers day.

These beautiful fabrics were very generously given to us by Northcott fabrics ‘cottons that feel like silk’, head over (after reading my blog of cause) to see all their amazing fabrics, i promise you, you’ll be blown away

DSC_3393.jpg

I wanted to set the scene to be winter – Christmas time to be precise (my other happy place to be), with snow falling outside the window, and this super soft fabric from ‘enchanted forest collection‘ from Northcott was perfect

DSC_3427

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas, with a cheeky bottle of fizz, and i love the fabrics from Artisan Spirit Shimmer 2017 – Peacock By Deborah Edwards  which were perfect for creating my bottle of fizz

dsc_3424.jpg

I used Island batik fabrics from my stash, to add colour to my row, and a very useful pack of 10 coloured threads from Gutermann

DSC_3409

And one of my favourite Gutermann threads – metallic silver, for creating bubbles

dsc_3433.jpg

My candles are scented ‘gingerbread, fir tree, cranberry and cinnamon – can you smell them?

Welcome to my house…

Hey, and welcome to my house, today is my day to reveal my house quilt for the ‘welcome to my house’ blog hop hosted by Carol @justletmequilt

dsc_32191.jpg

I just had to join in as soon as heard about it, there is something quite sweet about a quilted home… I would say ive finally found my ‘home’, after moving 18 times with my husband in 21 years, some of those moves were here in the uk, 7 of them were in Australia, and then a few more since arriving back in the uk…

dsc_32032.jpg

Home is where i am now, a 100 year old Toll Cottage, situated in the country in the South east of England, with my four kids, 2 dogs, 4 cats and hubby 🙂

I really love all things rustic/shabby chic or as my hubby calls it shabby shit! but i love it never-the-less, so i wanted my quilt to reflect this…

DSC_3218

I started by looking through my stash, to find suitable pieces, i love the natural linen from Higgs&Higgs – even though it has a tendency to crinkle, as linen does… and i was so pleased to find some natural Jute to frame the quilt, and a cute button

dsc_31981.jpg

The fabrics were a combination :

The flowers are from the Cottage garden range designed by Debbie Shore from Craft Cotton  and ‘Tilda Bumblebee Fabric’ from Tilda

The door and stepping stones are from ‘wild things’ collection by Island Batik

The Fairies and lettering are ‘prairie fairies night’ and ‘sprinkled petals moon’ from Art Gallery Fabric

The wadding and Bondaweb are both by Vliseline  and the threads are by Gutermann

DSC_3235

dsc_32161.jpg

AND the reason i mention all this…  because its

Giveaway Time!!

Im going to give away the pattern for this quilt, plus a kit that contains EVERYTHING you need to make your very own ‘home sweet home’ quilt. Yep, thats every piece of fabric, the button, the jute, the threads, the wadding, Bondaweb, binding and backing fabric!! This could make a fab Christmas present or simple a gift from me to you to keep.

Mini Love…

The second project in the wonderful world of being an Island Batik Ambassador, the challenge was to create to a mini quilt, titled ‘mini love’.

Mini Love

The products featured in this post were given to me by Island Batik. I have to confess this is my first mini quilt, don’t get me wrong, I’ve made small quilts and mug rugs, but this mini quilt is for hanging up, this mini quilt will have its pride of place in my bedroom, this mini quilt has a special meaning…

Fabrics were chosen, from my box of gorgeous batiks and my design was on paper. All my favorites colours, and for anyone who knows me, or follows me on Instagram, will know my love for purples

dsc_0292.jpg

This mini quilt was inspired by love, that special warming feeling of getting a hug when you need one, whether it be because your upset, scared, lonely or simply just because, a hug can say so much, without saying a word.

DSC_0294(1)

I enjoyed doing my favorite blanket stitch, and finished the quilt off with some free motion embroidery

DSC_0313

Thank for reading, happy sewing
