Beat the Heat Blog Hop

Hey guys,

Welcome along to the ‘Beat The Heat BLOG HOP’ a whole month packed full of all the new Island Batik Collections… plus there are prizes to be won along the way too.

Beat The Heat Blog Hop

click the link below to win a pre-cut bundle of Garden Party by Kathy Engle.

In Box 1 I received ‘GEARED UP’ a stunning collection of Autumnal colours; golds, browns, rusts, blacks and yellows. All with the most amazing prints of chains, cogs and gears

The idea I has for the quilt was obvious, it just had to be a quilt with gears…

I began by cutting lots of 8″ squares from the lighter fabrics, and after sewing them together in a random order, I started making my gears from the black prints…

I had such fun making the gears, and they were so simple to make, each gear is drawn onto the paper side of Vlieseline Bondaweb, then fused to the chosen fabric, and cut out. Once happy with the placement, peel away the backing paper, fuse using a dry heat to the top quilt and free motion quilt round each one.

I used the beautiful super strong No.50 Gutermann threads, from the denim professional jeans thread pack. I changed my machine needle to a Hemline ‘Top Stitch’ needle.

I was super pleased with the look of the stitches. The quilt is made using Hobbs Heirloom Cotton Batting.

My Finished Quilt

  1. Wow your quilt is gorgeous. Perfect for a man or someone that works with gears. thanks for sharing and inspiring. Such lovely fabrics. I dont do heat with high humidity so well, so I am only out in the early mornings. During the days I like to stay in the AC and quilt, read and make Christmas gifts. quilting dash lady at comcast dot net

  2. Love the quilt you made! It would be a great quilt for my nephew who loves working on old cars.

I have been staying in and sewing during the heat. We have been lucky though in that it hasn’t been too hot here this summer.

  3. I watch old Christmas movies and turn the thermostat temp down (when I don’t get caught). I can’t get over your Gears!!!!! I love the fabric. Reminds me of the prints I’ve seen in Uganda, Africa. My 11 yr old is gaga over gears. He is learning to sew, so a gears quilt is definitely on our to do list this year with school. (We homeschool, so we can do anything for art. This would be a perfect project!) Stay cool (hope all these suggestions in the comments help)! LOL!

  4. Your quilt is so awesome Michelle and I love your name for it. It fits perfectly with those fabrics. My son would love to have this quilt.
I beat the heat by staying indoors with the AC cranked up and a glass of iced tea close by. Thank you for your giveaway.

  5. Love your quilt!! My favorite way to beat the heat is to run through the sprinklers as I am moving the water on my lawn!! I would prefer to be at the beach, but that doesn’t seem to be an option right now (too bad my daughter moved from Hawaii!!).

  6. Down here in NZ the summers at our place do not get really hot, but I like to lie on our bed, with windows to the East and West wide open, to get any breeze there might be.And have a quilting magazine on hand to make the whole afternoon a total joy. Those cogs, innovative and what a great pattern for them,

  7. Hi Michelle! What a fun challenge and I would say you definitely met it. All of those bundles of fabrics are so pretty. I would be hard pressed to pick my favorite although all the brights in Garden Party sure look pretty. My favorite way to beat the heat is a/c and a nice tall, cold glass of lemonade. Yum! ~smile~ Roseanne

  8. I really love your quilt. The random background with the gear applique is a great way to show off this collection.
It has been so hot in Alabama this summer that I have been staying in the AC a lot more than normal.

  11. I really enjoy the heat of summer especially since we live on a golf course and DH loves to golf. I don’t play the game myself since I am allergic to the sun and get a bad reaction after 15 minutes. Instead I get to Beat the Heat by sitting at my sewing machine, playing with fabric while enjoying my view of the crazy golfers in the bright sunshine! 🥴 Carol Andrews

  12. And I can’t wait to get this line of fabric! I have made over 300 quilts; didn’t have one in my house when we moved here! I am now making quilts for me and this fabric is the perfect choice for one particular pattern I have, you know how that goes! Love your quilt by the way! 😉 Carol Andrews
