In Box 1 I received ‘GEARED UP’ a stunning collection of Autumnal colours; golds, browns, rusts, blacks and yellows. All with the most amazing prints of chains, cogs and gears

The idea I has for the quilt was obvious, it just had to be a quilt with gears…

I began by cutting lots of 8″ squares from the lighter fabrics, and after sewing them together in a random order, I started making my gears from the black prints…

I had such fun making the gears, and they were so simple to make, each gear is drawn onto the paper side of Vlieseline Bondaweb, then fused to the chosen fabric, and cut out. Once happy with the placement, peel away the backing paper, fuse using a dry heat to the top quilt and free motion quilt round each one.

I used the beautiful super strong No.50 Gutermann threads, from the denim professional jeans thread pack. I changed my machine needle to a Hemline ‘Top Stitch’ needle.

I was super pleased with the look of the stitches. The quilt is made using Hobbs Heirloom Cotton Batting.

  1. You always blow me away with your creativity! This quilt is no exception…just perfect! Beating the heat isn’t easy, so I may as well do something I enjoy. I turn the ceiling fan on high and keep a cold drink nearby while I sew!

  2. Your quilt is gorgeous! I love Steampunk style. Thanks for sharing this. To beat the heat, I go swimming with my eight-year-old granddaughter. We are doing a “pool tour” this summer, visiting all the pools in a thirty mile area. I love spending this time with her.

  3. A very creative quilt, Michelle, it is gorgeous!
Beating the heat is usually no problem where I live, just a couple of days a year we are “suffering”. Our houses are insulated to keep the warmth in, and not to keep the heat out, so open windows and doors are the only way to get some circulation.

  4. My favorite thing about precuts, besides the time-savings, is that you can sample a fabric line without a huge investment. There’s nothing like a cold drink and sitting ner a fan for cooling off from the heat.

  5. You already know how much I love this–honestly one of the best matched quilts to fabric that I’ve ever seen. I love the visible thread you used for quilting. Fantastic finish!
